MOVING SERVICES OUT OF THE MINERAL WATER HOSPITAL

We're planning to relocate these services, currently provided from the Mineral Water Hospital site, to a purpose built RNHRD and Therapies Centre on the RUH's Combe Park site in 2019. The new Centre will bring together a number of outpatient services from the RUH and RNHRD which support patients to live independently in the community. Patients will continue to be seen and treated by the same team, only the location will change. Peripheral clinics will continue in the same location. Please see here for more information.

Giant Cell Arteritis

We offer a fast track assessment pathway for patients suspected of having Giant Cell Arteritis.

The pathway is NOT suitable for patients with new visual disturbance. If your patient has new visual disturbance speak to the on-call ophthalmologist immediately for advice regarding treatment and referral and do NOT refer via this pathway.

Giant cell arteritis is very rare in patients aged <55 years of age. The risk increases with age.  Typical symptoms include a new headache poorly responsive to analgesia, raised inflammatory markers and systemic upset. Patients aged <55 years or with atypical symptoms should be discussed with rheumatology prior to referral. (Ward registrar via RNHRD switchboard 01225 465941 or through Consultant Connect).

To refer a patient please:

  • Take urgent bloods  Inflammatory markers are extremely useful in accurate GCA diagnosis, and initiating steroids can affect the result obtained. All patients should have the following blood tests taken immediately Plasma Viscosity, CRP , FBC, U&Es, LFTs
  • Initiate treatment GCA is a medical emergency. All suspected cases should receive treatment without delay. Guidelines recommend: 60mg Prednisolone if complicated eg visual disturbance, jaw claudication or 40mg Prednisolone if uncomplicated
  • Contact the ward registrar to discuss the referral. This ensures appropriate triage and helps to facilitate timely TA ultrasound and biopsy (contact via RNHRD switchboard 01225 465941)
  • Email a completed referral form along with a summary of the patients medication and comorbidities to
